Claude Design turns a conversation into a canvas.

What it is

Claude Design is Anthropic's tool for visual work: interactive prototypes, app screens, landing pages, one-pagers, posters and flyers. You don't need design training. You bring the idea and the judgement; Claude does the first draft and the tedious rework.

Each design pairs a chat with a live canvas. What appears on the canvas is a working design, not a flat picture, so buttons, forms and screens can behave the way the finished thing would.

Slide decks now have their own tool, Claude Slides. Claude Design is for everything else you'd judge by looking at it.

Where to find it

It's no longer only a separate website. You can reach it from almost anywhere you already use Claude.

  • In any chatAsk for a design ("mock up the sign-up screen we just talked about") and it opens beside the conversation. You can also choose Output, then Design, in the message box.
  • The Artifacts tabPick a Design template and start from there.
  • Claude CodeAsk for a design, or use the /design command to create, edit and sync designs, in the desktop app or the terminal.
  • The iOS and Android appsAsk for a design and view the result full screen in the Artifacts tab. Editing on the canvas and changing who can see it need the web or desktop app.
  • claude.ai/designThe original standalone workspace still works, and older projects stay there.

How a design comes together

  1. Start a design

    From a chat, the Artifacts tab, or claude.ai/design.

  2. Give it your look

    Attach a design system, if you have one, so everything uses your colours, fonts and components. Organisations usually set this up once for everyone.

  3. Add context

    Screenshots, a document or deck whose style you like, a sketch, or a code repository. The more Claude can see, the closer the first draft lands.

  4. Describe what you want

    Say what it is, how it's laid out, what goes in it, and who it's for. Claude may ask questions before it draws.

  5. Review and refine

    Treat the first version as a starting point. Change it through chat, comments, or direct edits on the canvas.

  6. Export or share

    Download it, send it to another tool, hand it to Claude Code to build, or share a link.

Write a good first prompt

A strong prompt covers four things: the goal, the layout, the content and the audience. Try it here. Edit the example, then copy the result into Claude.

Your prompt

Say whether it needs to work on phones, tablets, desktop or all three. If you're unsure of a direction, ask for two or three versions and compare them.

Three ways to refine

Talk in the chat

For changes to the whole design: a darker palette, a new section, a different arrangement, alternative layouts.

You can also ask Claude to explain its choices or check the design for accessibility and contrast.

Comment on the canvas

Click one element and say what to change: more padding on this button, a dropdown instead of these options.

If a comment seems to be ignored, paste the same words into the chat. That's a known workaround.

Edit it directly

Drag, resize and align elements yourself for quick visual adjustments.

Fastest when you can see exactly what's wrong and would rather fix it than describe it.

There's no version history yet. Before trying a very different direction, tell Claude to save what you have first; it will confirm where it's saved.

Send designs straight to Adobe (Experience Manager, Creativity, Journey Optimizer), Base44, Canva, Gamma, HubSpot, Hyperframes, Lovable, Miro, Netlify, Replit, v0, Vercel or Wix.
To build it
Hand off to Claude Code, locally or on the web, so it continues from the design itself rather than a screenshot.
Sharing
Designs start private. Use Share to let others view, comment on, or edit one.

Before you start

Claude Design is in beta on the paid Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. It's on by default for Pro, Max and Team; on Enterprise, an owner has to switch it on. It isn't part of the free plan.

It draws on the same usage limits as the rest of your Claude use, including Claude Code. Big projects and long rounds of changes use more.

Worth knowing

  • No version history yet, so save before big changes.
  • Two people editing the same design at once is still unreliable.
  • A design system is only as good as what it's built from. A messy codebase or incomplete file shows up in the results.
  • On phones you can request and view designs but not edit them.
  • If you hit a "chat upstream error", open a new chat tab in the same project.
